In the market for an air purifier? You might be wondering how much it’ll cost.
In Texas, the cost to install an air purifier can run you anywhere from $600-$3,500.
It’s a big range, but it depends on a few key factors:
- The type of air purifier you choose
- Installation considerations specific to your home
- The contractor you hire
To better understand the cost, below we’ll take a look at each factor.

Factor #1: The type of air purifier you choose
There are a number of air purifiers you can buy, but for Texas homeowners we typically recommend the following:
Electrostatic air cleaner ($700 and up)
Good for removing allergens such as:
- Dust
- Pet dander
- Hair
Using a high voltage current, electrostatic air cleaners essentially “zap” airborne particles that pass through it.
Installed near the return side of your HVAC system, the filter stops these particles from circulating through your home’s air.
Maintenance is pretty low. You don’t have to pay to replace the filter. Rather, you just need to clean it every so often.
UV light cleaner ($450 and up)
Good for purifying chemical pollutants, such as:
- Odors
- Mold spores
- Viruses
- Bacteria
Using powerful ultraviolet rays, UV light cleaners kill airborne germs and chemical pollutants.
Installed near the evaporator coils of your air conditioning system, when air passes over the coils, the UV light radiates whatever harmful pollutants are present. This prevents live germs from reproducing or spreading.
In the summer months (especially here in Texas) UV filters are especially great at stopping mold from circulating.
Maintenance is pretty low, but you will have to replace the bulb every 1-2 years. Depending on the kind you buy, replacement bulbs can cost $100 to $200.
Note: Germicidal cleaners aren’t good for removing allergens like dust or pet dander. But, you can install multiple air purifiers in your home, depending on your needs.
Ionic air purifier ($900 and up)
Good for purifying biological matter, such as:
- Bacteria
- Mold
- Pollen
- Smoke
- Viruses
The upside to ionic air purifiers is that they are “filter-less.” Meaning, you won’t have to pay to replace them.
Additionally, they’re good for removing both microbial pollutants (mold, bacteria, viruses) as well as allergens (like pollen).
Often installed in the blower assembly of your HVAC system, ionic air purifiers will send out negatively-charged ions into the air. Once these negative ions bond with positively-charged particles in the air, the particles become heavy, and will fall into a collection plate.
Maintenance is both cost-effective and easy. You simply need to clean the plate whenever it gets full.
HEPA air filter ($1,200 and up)
Good for eliminating 99.97% of microscopic matter, including:
- Viruses
- Bacteria
- Mold
- Pollen
- Smoke
- Dust
- Pet dander
HEPA stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” Commonly made from plastic or fiberglass, these filters can trap almost any sized particle.
In fact, HEPA filters are so effective, they’re often used in hospitals and laboratories.
The downside is that your HVAC system will likely need to be modified in order to fit one (HEPA filters are thicker in size).
Maintenance is also higher, as the filter will need to be tested annually. Expect to pay anywhere from $75 to $150 for replacement.
Factor #2: Installation considerations specific to your home
If adjustments to your HVAC or electrical system are needed, the cost of installing your air purifier will increase.
This includes:
- Accessibility - If your HVAC is difficult to reach (example: small attic, crawl space or tight closet) your install costs will be higher, because it might take the tehnician longer.
- Modifications - Air purifiers require good ductwork in place. If your ductwork is disconnected or leaky, repairs will increase your overall cost.
- Upgrades - To accommodate air purifying systems, sometimes you need a new electrical outlet, or even larger HVAC equipment. If this is the case, your install costs will go up.
Factor #3: The contractor you hire
Like all home repairs, the cost of installing an air purifier depends on the contractor you hire.
In general, the more experience a contractor has, the more expensive they will be.
When searching for a quality contractor, look for things like:
- Proof of licensing and insurance
- Free estimates and up-front pricing
- Written guarantee of work to be completed
- 5 star reviews from happy clients
- 10+ years of experience
There’s nothing more important than your family’s health and home. Take the time to invest in a good contractor, and you’ll reap better air and long-term peace and happiness.
